Chiropractic Schools

Author: K. Monteith

Chiropractic schools provide training and education in chiropractic health treatments. Chiropractic schools instruct students in a variety of topics related to the diagnosis and treatment of nervous and skeletal system problems. Chiropractic schools and colleges teach that interference within these systems disrupts normal body functioning and lowers the patient's resistance to disease.

Chiropractic schools take a holistic approach to the overall well-being of the patient, and a chiropractor takes into account every facet of the patient's life, including exercise, diet, rest, environment and heredity. Chiropractic schools instruct prospective physicians to use non-surgical, natural, and drug-free health treatments, and to rely on the self-healing mechanisms of the patient's body.

Chiropractic schools recommend that students have an earned degree in the arts or sciences from an accredited college or university before entering the chiropractic educational system. Required areas of study must also include at least 90 semester hours of English, social sciences or humanities, organic and inorganic chemistry, biology, physics, and psychology.

Upon completion of the chiropractic instruction, potential chiropractors must pass a four-part exam administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Depending upon individual state requirements, prospective chiropractors may be required to take supplemental examinations.

Approximately 70 percent of chiropractors go into solo practice. While some chiropractors become instructors, others conduct research at other chiropractic schools, institutions and colleges, or practice chiropractic medicine in clinics and hospitals.

According to Chiropractic Economics, self-employed chiropractors have higher earning potential than salaried chiropractors, and males earn about 25% more than females. With a degree from an accredited chiropractic schools, you can expect to earn anywhere from $90k - $139k per year.
